What is Animal Assisted Education?

Animal Assisted Education (AAE) is a unique method of teaching (usually with a specific goal in mind) whereby animals are part of the integral educational process.

AAE works best with primary aged children with low self-esteem, behavioural issues and or anxiety as these children often, are more willing to interact with animals over people. For Example; Animals of all kinds can make ideal reading companions whom unlike a childs peers, animals are attentive listeners; they don’t judge or criticize. AAE is slowly being adopted here in Australia by mainstream educators as they witness the  positive effects of children who have experienced AAE are becoming less intimidated by the reading process and more inclined to forget about their reading anxieties.

What is Animal Assisted Therapy?

Animal Assisted Therapy (A.A.T) is a modality of therapy where an animal assists in the therapeutic process to help a client, (or group of clients), to reach a their therapy goals. These are called Animal Assisted Interventions (AAI), which can be used to assist in the treatment of many mental health issues, including but not limited to:

  • Anxiety (Generalised, Separation & Social Anxiety)

  • Depression

  • Behaviour Disorders (ODD & ADHD)

  • Anger Management

  • Self-Esteem

  • Assertiveness Training

  • Social Skills & Empathy Training

  • Emotion Regulation

AAT is used in conjunction with other more traditional modalities of therapy, and as such it works in a very similar fashion. The client will engage with the therapist to be supported through and learn strategies to help manage their current situation.

Depending on the individual situation, the therapeutic process generally goes for between 6 to 12 sessions.

Horses For Health Redlands Incorporated has partnered with the internationally renowned

Horse Boy Foundation.org becoming Australia's First Horse Boy Method provider. Horse Boy Foundation have been developing these techniques since 2004 and now work with a variety of schools and home school cooperatives as well as with therapists, parents, teachers, and other professionals across 20 countries and rising.

Kinetic Learning methods (Movement Method) are applicable and adaptable for home and class room lessons. Watch here as Horse Boy Founder Rupert explains:

How does Movement Method work?

Currently more than 25,000 families and children benefit from Horse Boy Foundation trained approaches each week.

What many people do not understand is the link between movement and the main learning centers of the brain, suffice to say that the right kind of movement - moving while problem solving - activates the cerebellum, the vestibular system, and the pre-frontal cortex and in addition both oxygenates the brain and causes it to produce more neurons - literally growing the IQ as you move.

"HB Movement Method" lesson plans are available for both home-schoolers and regular students alike, speak to one of our staff for more information or come try it and make a booking.

Horse Boy Method is a unique scientifically proven Equine Assisted Therapy (E.A.T) which addresses the nervous system to build neuro-plasticity in people with neuro-cognitive conditions such as; Post Traumatic Stress, Depression, Anxiety, Autism and Attention Deficit.

Often, regular equine therapeutic riding don't have the intended effect for people with neuro-cognitive conditions because of the methodologies adopted in traditional therapeutic riding which were created to address more 'physical' disability. Additionally, traditional E.A.T often rely heavily on the rider being able to follow top down instruction (i.e. having a neuro-typical brain) and having a motivation to ride horses in the first place.
